For every book you've loved, abandoned or mean to read

A reading journal and a library of your own, kept by candlelight. Shelve your books, bind them in covers you design, and write about them as much or as little as you like.

Bookcases you name and dress yourself

Each bookcase has four shelves and a name of your choosing: one for the classics, one for the books you'll never lend, one for the ones you gave up on. Pick the wood, the panel behind the books and the shape of the top, then stand a candle or a skull between the spines.

Adding a book takes a moment. Type its title, or scan the barcode on the back.

Bind each book the way you picture it

Cloth, leather, velvet or marbled paper, stamped in gilt, silver or copper, with a frame, an emblem and the title set in a face that suits it. Or put a photo of your own on the front.

Write as much or as little as you like

A single star and a line is as welcome as pages of passages, photos and notes. There are no templates to fill in and nobody counting your words.

Copy out a passage with where you found it, mark it in one of five colors and add a thought of your own. Rate in half stars, note what you want to look into, and choose the paper, lines and border for a whole book or a single page.

Finished, at last

Jane Eyre, written on a Sunday night

I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.
Chapter 23

Read this one twice on the train home.

Stayed up far too late for the last hundred pages. Rochester is still a mess, and I forgave the book for him anyway.

Challenges that end in dragons

Thirteen challenges come with Solstice, and each leads to a pet or an object you can't have any other way. Set challenges of your own too, with whatever reward you promise yourself.
